Amanda Dalley: What I Wish My Parents Had Left Me

Amanda Dalley: What I Wish My Parents Had Left Me

Some people leave behind estates and heirlooms. Others leave behind stories. But what happens when there are no stories to hold on to? When Linda Robertson lost both of her parents, she realized she had nothing that truly connected her to them – just scattered photographs and a few cryptic letters. That silence, that emptiness, changed everything. It’s why she decided to write her own memoir – so her sons would never have to wonder who their mother really was. This is her story.

I Always Thought I Knew My Parents

Then they died, and I realized how little I actually did.

When my mom passed five years ago, I was devastated, but at least I still had my dad. Then, two years ago, he was gone, too. And in the quiet that followed, I found myself grasping for something – anything – that would help me keep them close.

I found boxes of old photos, letters with missing context, old receipts, and postcards from places I never knew they had visited.

But their voices? Their thoughts? The things they would have told me if they had just written them down?

Gone.

That absence hit me harder than their deaths. Because now I would never be able to ask the questions that mattered.

And my biggest fear became that one day, my own sons might feel the same way about me.

Filling in the Blanks

I didn’t want my boys – Mark and Evan – to piece me together through scraps and secondhand stories. I wanted them to know me, the real me, in my own words.

So, I started writing. At first, it was just memories scribbled into a notebook: my first job at the town bakery, the way I met their father at a 4th of July barbecue, the first time I held each of them in my arms.

It felt good to remember, but it also felt messy, incomplete. Like I was trying to put together a puzzle without knowing what the picture was supposed to be.

That’s when I found Memowrite.

Turning Memories Into a Story

Memowrite wasn’t just about writing – it was about storytelling. Their prompts guided me like a gentle nudge in the right direction.

Instead of staring at a blank page, I was asked: What’s a lesson you learned the hard way? What’s a small moment that changed your life?

Questions that made me think, that made me dig deeper than surface-level recollections.

I wrote about my childhood, growing up in a house full of music, where my mom’s humming filled every corner.

I wrote about how I used to sneak out with my best friend, Becky, and how we swore we’d move to Paris but never got further than the next town over.

I wrote about my dad’s quiet strength, how he could fix anything with his hands but never quite knew how to say the words "I love you." And I wrote about how I promised myself I’d be different with my own children – how I would tell them, over and over again, so they would never doubt it.

A Legacy of Words

When Memowrite turned my words into a book, I felt something shift inside me.

This wasn’t just a collection of memories. It was proof that I existed. That my stories mattered. That long after I was gone, my sons wouldn’t have to guess who I was.

That was the moment I knew: I had given them something real. Something my parents never gave me.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from this process, it’s that a life should not be left in fragments. Stories deserve to be told – not pieced together from old letters and half-remembered anecdotes.

Memowrite helped me give my sons the gift my parents never thought to leave behind: a record of who I am.

And now, when I am no longer here, my words will be.
