Shelley Carey: The Stories I Almost Left Behind

Shelley Carey: The Stories I Almost Left Behind

Sometimes, it takes a brush with the unknown to make us realize what truly matters. For Shelley Cooper, that realization came when she stood on the edge of life itself. It wasn’t just a wake-up call – it was a reckoning. The stories she had lived, the moments she had cherished, could all be lost in an instant. And that terrified her more than anything. This is not just a memoir – it’s her way of ensuring she’s never forgotten.

Death Wasn’t Supposed To Feel So Ordinary

I remember the beeping of the heart monitor, the sterile white walls of the hospital room, and the pressure of my daughter’s hands wrapped around mine.

I remember the strange weightlessness, the eerie quiet, the sudden knowledge that my body was no longer in charge.

I was floating.

A Second Chance and a Terrifying Realization

They call it a near-death experience. I call it a second chance.

Because as I hovered somewhere between here and wherever “there” is, a singular thought hit me like a thunderbolt: I have left nothing behind.

No letters. No recorded stories. No blueprint for my grandkids to know who I really was.

Just a pile of old photo albums, a handful of trinkets, and a lifetime of unwritten memories. That thought scared me more than death itself.

A New Beginning

So, when I came back – because I did come back – I made a decision. I would write it all down. And not just for me, but for them.

Memowrite was Emily’s idea.

“Mom,” she said, placing her laptop in front of me, “you always say you’re not a writer, but that’s just an excuse. If you can tell a story, you can write a story.”

I rolled my eyes but clicked the link anyway. I wasn’t convinced. But then, I saw one of the questions: What’s one moment in your life that changed everything?

Oh, I had an answer for that.

And just like that, the floodgates opened.

Bringing the Book to Life

One of the most touching parts of the process was choosing the photos.

I sifted through old albums, laughing at the hairstyles and marveling at how young we all once were.

A picture of my wedding day, a candid shot of my children playing in the yard, a cherished moment of my late husband looking at me with that familiar twinkle in his eye.

These images weren’t just pictures; they were pieces of my heart, frozen in time.

When the final draft arrived, I hesitated before opening it.

What if it wasn’t good enough? What if my words hadn’t captured what I felt?

But as I turned the pages, I saw my life laid out before me – not perfect, but real. And that was enough.

Unlocking Memories, One Story at a Time

I wrote about my childhood – sticky summer days running barefoot through my grandfather’s orchard, the smell of warm peaches hanging in the air.

I wrote about my wild twenties, the ones I never told my kids about, where I danced until sunrise and loved recklessly.

I wrote about my husband, about the way he tucked a strand of hair behind my ear when he thought no one was looking.

And I wrote about the things that hurt – the regrets, the losses, the nights I lay awake wondering if I had done enough.

Memowrite made it easy.

The questions nudged me forward, kept me from getting stuck in my own head.

When the final copy arrived, I held it in my hands like a newborn – something precious, something fragile, something that would outlive me.

The first time my granddaughter flipped through the pages, she looked up at me with wide eyes. “Grandma,” she said, “I never knew you were this cool.”

I laughed, ruffled her hair, and said, “I’m full of surprises, kid.”

This book is my proof that I was here. That I lived. That I mattered.

And when my time finally does come – when I don’t get another second chance – my stories won’t fade. They’ll be here, waiting, ready to whisper to the people I love.

Memowrite gave me that gift. And for that, I am forever grateful.
